Swipe Left or Right? 6 Pro Tips for Finding a Data Governance Solution Love Match

View all posts on Data Governance & Stewardship

Odds are you’ve spent a decent, if not significant, amount of time thinking about and compiling a comprehensive list of what you want out of a data governance solution and who you think might fit that profile. And I bet you wish the decision was as easy as swiping left or right, a-la-Tinder. But who do you choose? How? What if you let the perfect one get away? Collibra, Alation, DATUM? Argh! Before you settle for choosing by who has the cutest puppy, check out the pro tip list below to get past the superficial and find your perfect match.

  1. Partner Up!
Much like personal relationships, you’ll want someone who treats you better than a number in a spreadsheet. Your solution partner should not only provide a quality technical platform, but should be your trusted advisor in your data governance initiatives.

  2. All Business, All the Time.
Your ideal data governance solution should be able to provide line-of-sight from your business goals and objectives to the data you govern.  This “top down” approach makes data governance dialogue meaningful to executives and compelling to business leaders, supporting organizational buy-in.  This approach also helps organizations focus on the critical data elements that matter most– those that drive business performance. If potential matches, such as Collibra, don’t link data to business objectives, KPIs and metrics - swipe left.

  3. Support Different Approaches.
No two organizations are the same and neither are their approaches. You’ll want a solution that can also support a “middle out” and “bottom up” approach to drive business process optimization and compliance, while linking governance to business value.

  4. Avoid Stranger Danger.
Who is implementing the solution you just bought? You don’t want just anyone hanging around. Your love match should offer in-house product implementation services. Why? As your trusted advisor, they have your best interests at heart and are invested in your long term success.  You’ll also benefit from their expertise and know that the real-life battle testing contributes continuously to the product’s working design and creates the feel of “built by business users for data users”.

  5. What is the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?
You’ll want to carefully consider the pros and cons of on-premises and cloud deployments. A well architected cloud solution (multi-tenant SaaS) should offer corresponding benefits of lower TCO, automatic upgrades and scaling, and consistent versions across the user community.  If you’re eyeing a solution that was developed for on-premises deployment but can, for instance, be run on AWS cloud - be sure to find out if they are deployed in a single tenancy model which still requires customer-specific upgrades and maintenance.

  6. Focus on the Big Picture.
Does your love match support enterprise usage? For example, can metrics, policies, rules, and standards be re-used “project to project” as new data catalogs are recommended for each domain?  How hard is the initial set-up and usability?
